Assistant Professor of Music Education Topic: Social Justice in Music Education Karen Salvador was appointed Assistant Professor of Music Education at the University of Michigan-Flint in 2011. Dr. Salvador is committed to preparing excellent music teachers for students from early childhood to mature learners in public school and other settings. She teaches courses in music education to both music majors and education majors, and supervises teacher candidates.
Dr. Salvador earned her Ph.D. in Music Education from Michigan State University. While there, she taught early childhood music to students from birth to age five at the Michigan State University Community Music School. She also taught courses in music for elementary education majors and supervised music student teachers. Dr. Salvador holds a master’s degree in choral conducting from Michigan State University, and has directed choirs of singers from elementary to retirement ages at Michigan State, in public schools, as a part of after-school children’s choir organizations, and in churches. Prior to commencing her master’s degree study, Dr. Salvador worked as a choir director and taught drama in after-school programs in New Zealand. While there, she frequently appeared as a soprano recitalist and oratorio soloist, most notably in Bach’s St. John Passion with the Palmerston North Renaissance Singers and Manawatu Symphony. Dr. Salvador taught elementary general music (K-4) in the Eaton Rapids, MI public schools for four years. She fervently believes that music education is necessary as a part of public school curricula, not only because of the public features of music programs, such as performing groups and elementary music programs, but also because of what music is and can do for children and adolescents, particularly those at risk of poor school performance. Dr. Salvador’s research pertains to differentiation of instruction, inclusive practices, and social justice in early childhood and public school music programs. She has presented at conferences and workshops in Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, North Carolina, and Arizona, and her research has been published in the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, Journal of Music Teacher Education, Update: Applications of Research in Music Education, Music Educators Journal, the Journal of Singing: the Official Journal of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and theMichigan Music Educator.
