Assistant Professor of Music Education Topic: Amp-Up NYC, popular music pedagogy Lindsay Weiss, Ed.D. is Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Music Education at Drake University in Des Moines, IA. She was recently selected to become a national scorer of the high-stakes performance-based teaching assessment, edTPA, through Pearson and serves as an assessment and research consultant for the non-profit music organization, Little Kids Rock. Prior to moving to Des Moines, Dr. Weiss was an adjunct assistant professor of applied instrumental instruction and graduate studies in music education at Teachers College, Columbia University and an adjunct assistant professor of music education at Kean University Conservatory of Music in Union, New Jersey. She also held the title of Senior Research Associate at the Center for Arts Education Research where she managed and assisted with the design of a two-year program assessment of Amp Up NYC, a collaboration between the New York City Department of Education, Little Kids Rock, and Berklee College of Music.
Dr. Weiss has a collective thirteen years of public school music teaching and supervising experience in grades PreK-12 in suburban, urban, and rural public and private schools in Pennsylvania, New York City, and New Jersey. She has taught PreK-8th grade general music, 4th-12th grade band, 4th-6th grade chorus, 5th-6th grade strings, and has served as an Assistant High School Marching Band Director and High School Musical Pit Band Director. Prior to her public school teaching career she worked in arts management as the Manager of Education and Community Engagement with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Weiss holds an Ed.D. and an Ed.M. in Music and Music Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. She earned an Ed.M. in Education and Educational Leadership as well as a B.S. in Music Education with a concentration in bassoon from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She is a member of the International Society of Music Education, the National Association for Music Education, the Society for Music Teacher Education, the Iowa Music Educators Association, and Sigma Alpha Iota. Her research interests include examining adolescent student engagement and motivation during secondary school music classes, popular music pedagogies, and preservice music teacher identity formation. |
