Ruben Newell is currently an instrumental music instructor at Denison High School in Denison, Iowa, where he is beginning his ninth year in that position. At Denison High School, Mr. Newell oversees the 9-12 instrumental music program, including two concert bands, two jazz bands, two mariachi ensembles, the Monarch Marching Band and the Monarch Pep Band. He also teaches 9-12 lessons and music theory classes, as well as assists with the middle school mariachi and jazz programs.
Mr. Newell received his Bachelor of Music degree from Iowa State University in 2000, and has previously taught in Corning and Atlantic, Iowa. He is a National Board Certified Teacher, and in 2017, was named as a DeLucia Award Winner in Music Education by the Mockingbird Foundation. Mr. Newell is an active clinician and adjudicator for the Iowa High School Music Association, and has served as President of Southwest Iowa Bandmasters Association as well as Head Director of the Southwest Iowa Honor Marching Band. The mariachi program in Denison has been recognized as the first formal mariachi program in Iowa, and have been featured in numerous publications, including “The Iowan” and “School Band and Orchestra” magazines. They have performed numerous education conferences around Iowa, including multiple appearances at the Iowa Bandmasters Association conference. Mr. Newell lives in Denison with is his wife, Sarah, and is active in the Crawford County Arts Council. |
