Sarah Dougherty
Sarah is currently the Visual Arts Curriculum Coordinator and the Turnaround Arts Program Director for Des Moines Public Schools. The Turn Around Arts Program is designed to help narrow the achievement gap and improve student engagement through the arts. She was an art teacher in the schools who took an admin job to get more arts into the whole school curriculum. Arts integration is the idea of using arts to help teach other subjects. It's not teaching other subject in the arts. It's taking the research that using arts can help students learn other subject matter and putting into practice. In some schools, the music teacher has nothing to do with the arts integration.
Sarah grew up in and graduated from Story City. She received her BA in Biological/Pre-Medical Illustration from Iowa State, Art Education from the University of Iowa, and MA in Education from Morningside. Sarah was the 2013 State of Iowa Outstanding Art Educator |
